dMAT for APS Germany: What Every Indian Student Needs to Know

If you're planning to study in Germany and have recently stumbled upon the term “dMAT” while browsing online, there's no need to panic. Many students are googling this right now, but there's no reason to worry about it.

As of June 29, 2026, APS India has introduced a new requirement called the dMAT (Digital Master Test) in the certification process for selecting applicants for Master’s programs. And with the rapid spread of this information online, it might seem like everything has changed, but fear not; let's break down what dMAT really is, who needs to take it, and how to go about it.

What is dMAT?

If Germany is on your list, you may already know about the APS certificate, a.k.a the Academic Evaluation Centre, which verifies your academic documents and is mandatory for Indian students applying for a student visa. 

A new addition to this process is the Digital Master Test (dMAT), a standardised aptitude test introduced through APS India for Indian students wishing to pursue a Master's degree in Germany. This test does not replace the APS certificate; rather, it complements it. The dMAT is developed and conducted by g.a.s.t., not directly by APS India. Once you take the test, the results will be referenced with your APS certificate.

Who Needs a dMAT?

This section is what most of the students are here for, so let’s dive into the details!

You need to take the dMAT only if the following conditions apply to you:

• You’re applying for a Master's program

  
  

• You’re applying for the summer intake of 2027 or later

• You began your APS process on or after June 29, 2026

  
  

• You are not applying through an official exchange, dual degree, or university partnership program

How Does the dMAT Test Look?

If the dMAT applies to you, here’s what you can expect:

Duration: Approximately 3.5 hours, including a break.

Format: Computer-based, single-choice questions, conducted at designated centres across India.

Structure: There are two sections: a core module that tests general cognitive and analytical reasoning, and a subject module that assesses your application of academic knowledge to problem-solving.

Fee: Approximately €150 (around ₹16,350)

Validity: Once issued, your dMAT certificate does not expire.

Conducted by: g.a.s.t., the official German testing body.

Heads up: A low score does not automatically disqualify your APS application. What matters for APS certification is that you have completed and submitted your dMAT certificate, not that you have achieved a certain score.

A Few Extra Facts You Need to Know 

If you are applying for the winter 2026-27 term, you are exempt from the dMAT requirement

The first dMAT results will be released on October 12, 2026, by which time most winter 2026-27 application deadlines will have already passed. Therefore, if you have secured a seat for winter 2026-27, the dMAT does not apply to you.

If you started your APS process before June 29, 2026, you are exempt too

The dMAT requirement only applies to those who begin their APS process on or after that date.

If you do need to take the dMAT, make sure to plan accordingly

Treat dMAT registration and test slots the same way you would a language test or the GRE– schedule them early. Ensure that your other documents (language scores, SOPs, LORs, transcripts) are prepared concurrently so that the dMAT does not become a bottleneck in your application process.
